During the U.S. occupation of Haiti, which began in 1915, there were numerous instances of violence and human rights abuses. One particularly notorious incident involved the execution of a Haitian man named Charlemagne Péralte. Péralte was a prominent resistance leader who opposed the U.S. occupation. In 1919, he was captured by U.S. Marines and subsequently executed. His body was hung in a door frame as a gruesome warning to others who might resist the occupation.
